System of the Day #6 – Gulmurn

This is my sixth hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020. All die rolls are made with a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years.

Gulmurn is an important high tech world in the region. The world is split between five “competing” nations, each specializing in a number of high technology industries. Competition between these nations is “brisk” – a major reason the world has not yet united under a single governing body. This has increased competition, but also reduced efficiency. Surprisingly, little corporate espionage has been conducted over the years; though energetic and fierce, competition between the nations (which are probably better described as corporations) is polite. It is reported that negotiations may be underway to combine the governments, a move which economists and observers say will greatly improve efficiency and reduce prices.

Gulmurn has a starport, complete with accompanying orbital facility, for each government, as well as an ‘open’ starport, where most off-world trade is handled. By agreement, all resources accumulated from the system’s other worlds is sold here, in a frenzied “open air” style market.

Products produced on Gulmurn are generally of high quality and reliability, justifying their overall high costs. Starships produced here are of exceedingly high quality, especially their small craft, and are in high demand, even though they are incredibly expensive when compared to ships constructed at other nearby shipyards.

Although not warlike or expansionist, Gulmurn maintains a sizeable patrol fleet to protect the system’s wide ranging interests, as well as the high trade traffic.
