System of the Day #7 – Frell

This is my seventh hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020. At this point I’ve made it an entire week without any delays, which is pretty darn good for this geek, lol.

Frell is an isolated world, sitting an absolute minimum of 52 hours inside the primary’s jump limit at 1G (assuming a perfect jump). Travel times are far more likely to be at least double this. Due to this, the world stagnates in isolation.

Frell has recently undergone yet another government change. Unlike previous governments, usually led by strongmen or thugs, this one was led by a merchant, a shop owner who was educated off world, returning ten years ago after decades of interstellar travel. She has instituted reforms, reduced taxes, and looks to be improving the small government’s efficiency. Corruption in the bureaucracy has been greatly reduced.

Frell itself is a decent sized world, with a single continent and small archipelago. Much of the world’s trade goods are dried fish, minerals, and some rare gems. However, an off world survey company has been hired by the new government to look for other resources. Rumor is they were once business partners of the new leader of Frell, but this is unconfirmed.

Bright, located in the Primary star’s third orbit, is a barely habitable world. Its highly reflective surfaces allow enough heat and sunlight to be radiated back into space, and the thick atmosphere helped shield the inhabitants from radiation. Unfortunately, the heat of the world still approaches unbearable levels. A colony was abandoned within ten years, after nearly 40% of the colonists developed vision problems, with a high number of them suffering permanent blindness. Bright’s spaceport was left in place. Sitting on a small rock island 20 km off the old colony, its current condition is unknown.

Waypoint sits just inside the system’s Jump Limit. It was established years ago by a small out-system enterprenuerial group. It sells refined fuel (at standard cost), as well as providing ship supplies (at a 30% mark up), and basic ship repairs. A pair of fast shuttles is maintained for search and rescue operations. Due to a number of pirate attacks years ago, the local employees are all trained in basic combat, and both shuttles are well armed.

Astute readers of science fiction may recognize this system name, and rightly so. This name was unashamedly borrowed from a great series which Heavily influenced the Traveller RPG – The Dumarest Saga, written by E. C. Tubb from 1967 to 2008.
I make no claim to this name; I am only using it for this home brew setting.
