Caltoon is a very high tech world with a pleasant climate. With its high technology and mild climate, life on Caltoon is very pleasant. Whether it remains so is a question for the future.
Economic and political issues have been noted by local and regional analysts. There is a growing concern about the economy’s “focus” (the world produces far more goods for local consumption than it really needs, far exceeding exports), and there are growing political movements in the lower classes and certain “ivory tower” universities which seek to ‘correct’ these problems. Unfortunately, the basis for these desired corrections seem to be based on ancient forms of communism and socialism. Certain elements/departments in the government have taken note of these issues, and have begun to attempt what they see as corrective action. These efforts are, however, hampered by the world’s inefficient representative democracy.
One government response is an increase in the size of the Army. Always small and efficient, the Army suddenly finds itself having to be in too many places at the same time as it assists local enforcers, while engaged in a form of potential conflict it seems to be ill-suited for. A recruiting campaign to increase its manpower has been far less effective than desired or needed, and the situation remains uncertain.
Surprisingly, for a world with significantly higher technology than its neighbors, Caltoon’s exported technology isn’t excessively over-priced. One reason for this may be the system’s need for greater resources; selling its high tech wares at reasonable prices can greatly increase sales volumes and incomes, of course, but may have other problems associated with it. Weapon systems are one area which the government has forbidden for export, of course, as well as medical technology – a surprising prohibition. Curiously, medical technology prices have been increasing steadily, especially certain critical life-saving medications.
Caltoon has settled other minor worlds in the system, several of which remain under its direct control. These include two penal colonies, which house an increasing population of political prisoners. Caltoon maintains a small, but powerful local Navy to protect the system. This Navy also patrols nearby systems to protect commerce in the region.

Astute readers of science fiction may recognize this system name, and rightly so. This name was unashamedly borrowed from a great series which Heavily influenced the Traveller RPG – The Dumarest Saga, written by E. C. Tubb from 1967 to 2008.
