System of the Day #14 – Mailarette

This is my 14th hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.

Mailarette is home to a large, aquatic, semi-intelligent species. Researchers have established an orbital class C starport to facilitate research of this mysterious species, as well as provide a base for warships, which enforce a strict No Contact policy. Several nearby polities supply the occasional warship to help enforce the no contact zone. Mercenary ships are also present, paid with funding from various regional universities and private parties.

Other than this research effort, there is little activity in the remainder of the system. Frontier refueling in Mailarette’s oceans is, of course, prohibited, and the ban is strictly enforced. Visiting ships are directed to the orbital port, which supplies refined fuel at standard cost. The system’s two planetoid belts have only been partially surveyed.

Researchers have ringed Mailarette with high tech satellites, which are used to track the natives, as well as help prevent unauthorized landing attempts. As is usual for tidally-locked worlds with a high percentage of ocean coverage, Mailarette is subject to a fair number of storms. A wide, active hurricane zone coincides with the world’s temperate zone along its equator. This same area is, of course, a primary area where these natives are frequently found. This has made continued research “interesting and dangerous” at times.

Astute readers of science fiction may recognize this system name, and rightly so. This name was unashamedly borrowed from a great series which Heavily influenced the Traveller RPG – The Dumarest Saga, written by E. C. Tubb from 1967 to 2008.
I make no claim to this name; I am only using it for this home brew setting.

This system was generated by hand with a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years, using the Traveller5 rules. Feel free to use this system in your own campaigns, but please do not publish them for profit, nor publish without obtaining prior permission. Thank you!

As always, comments and input are appreciated. Keep on Travelling!
