Micuhiri is a fairly important world. Its rich agricultural output supports a productive society. Tidally locked to its Primary star, the small world still manages to produce a fair amount of agricultural produce.
Surprisingly, Micuhiri also exports healthy quantities of strong lumber. A imported, modified “tree”, called bambaa, grows very quickly on the steep island hillsides of the world’s unoccupied, rain- and wind-swept islands. Though this plant doesn’t grow very tall, its wood is very tough and flexible, and resistant to most parasites. It is used for many local building projects, and is also prized offworld for a wide variety of uses.
In the primary star’s 8th orbit a penal colony was established. Thirty-odd years ago local rebels, supported by offworld interests, attempted to overthrow the efficient bureaucratic government. The rebellion was only haphazardly supported by the working class citizens, whose interests it claimed to represent, and was quickly crushed. Evidence of support by one regional shipping conglomerate was found, resulting in that company being permanently banned from the system. The rebellion’s local supporters, all 500 or so of the survivors, were placed on a distant world, and given various resources (and occasional shipments of supplies), and told to, “establish their own worker’s paradise”. Surprisingly, they have survived, and even thrived to a degree. The government is considering petitions to grant the prisoners full pardons, and local rule.
A group of hardy local “adventurers” (no other term really fits) took up a challenge ten years ago, to colonize an ice world in the companion system. So far they have survived with some support. They are currently researching methods to warm the planet up, with little success.
