Dosacarro looks and feels like a system which has been ruthlessly strip mined. And that is exactly what happened.
Ages ago, rich deposits of copper and lanthanum, among others, were found. A number of competing companies sent in teams of workers. These groups ruthlessly pillaged the otherwise-worthless system within a few decades, leaving behind tailing piles, mostly-empty and collapsed tunnels, scarred moons, and shattered planetoids. The deposits were so rich the system was a frequent target of pirates. With security teams and mercenaries brought in to protect the facilities, it was only a short time before conflicts erupted between competing companies. These events were relatively short-lived, however, and stories of these “glory days” are more fanciful than truthful.
Once the deposits played out, and no new significant finds were made, the companies and their mercenaries abandoned Dosacarro, leaving behind much of their old, worn equipment. A number of workers, technicians, and their families were also left behind.
Forced to fend for themselves, they survived as best they could, rummaging through the system’s detritus, mining what little remained in the mines, and so forth. Some weapons systems remained, so they were able to protect themselves from piracy. They claim to have driven off the pirates, but in reality they stopped coming, as there was (and is) nothing of value anymore.
These days the descendants continue to eke out a living, scraping by with whatever is available. They will occasionally have something for sale for passing ships, usually a few tons of low grade ore. The pirates which once raided the system are now rumored to be using this system as a base. This makes sense; there are too many places to hide which are difficult to scan with sensors, and the locals appreciate what little business their former adversaries bring to the system.
As can be guessed, the system’s starport(s) and associated startowns (they are essentially the same) are a haven for the desperate, the criminal, or those who don’t wish to be found. These areas are quite unwelcoming to people who are too nosy.
