Baldar is a system which has little to offer visitors. Its hellish environment is “less than inviting”, though at least it isn’t extremely warm. For the most part; early settlers decided to place the starport in a warm, dry desert region. However, a canal system was later built from a nearby river, providing water (and fuel) to the site.
Observant visitors may notice that this canal is in less than ideal condition. It needs repairs, and the government has no funds for them. The canal has also become a dumping ground for locals’ unwanted trash. Indeed, as this canal runs behind the starport itself, many visiting starship crews have also taken advantage of the situation. At least one outbreak of disease has swept through the single settlement recently, incapacitating the town and port for several weeks. Some people speculate another outbreak will occur, if something isn’t done to clean the canal up.
While the local government has a high law level, it is fairly powerless to enforce them. Authorities do not have the manpower nor technology to stop infractions, and most everyone is aware of this. It is certainly suspected that the situation will continue to grow worse, and a small group of citizens, known as the “Eco Vigilantes”, is purportedly attempting to clean up the canal, in the interest of public health and safety. Meanwhile, everyone else continues to pollute the river/canal, and there is a growing health crisis in the works.

This world’s name was taken from that great scifi book series, The Dumarest Saga, written by E. C. Tubb, and published from 1967 to 2008. I make no claim to the name; I am only using it as an homage to a series which heavily influenced me (and, according to legend, Traveller itself).
