System of the Day #49 – Krieg

Although Krieg is a high population, industrial world, it is still considered a marginal backwater. The system’s low technological base limits demand for its products, and it’s production is almost entirely based around local needs. It does produce some commercial goods for other nearby (non-industrial) systems, however. Thus traffic to the world is light; Krieg has a handful of ‘starports’, but these are little more than marked landing areas, which have been located near transportation centers and fuel sources for the convenience of visiting starships. In these locations fuel lines have been placed, allowing visiting ships to refuel from the world’s oceans relatively quickly. Filtering systems have also been installed, preventing ship’s fuel tanks from being clogged by local vegetation. However, some captains have reported occasional problems with these systems. Also, these filters do NOT convert the fuel into a form safe for use in Jump drives; ship captains must still use on board filtering systems to convert the water to hydrogen. Note that there is NO charge to visiting ships to use these pumping systems.

Krieg’s inner system worlds are visited even less frequently than Krieg itself. Because of the system’s large, hot primary star, travel times to the inner system are lengthy, and there is almost no support if a vessel were to encounter problems. Due to this the inner system is almost totally ignored, even by most independent miners. It is unknown if a full scale system survey has ever been conducted.

Krieg’s government may be classed as a Representative Democracy, but visitors are hard pressed to discern this. Competion between regions has nearly resulted in wars, especially election years, which occur every seven standard years. The various regional governments each maintain their own forces, of varying capabilities, and “safety inspections” crossing regional borders can be rather thorough. In past years (especially local election years) this has caused problems for some starship crews and offworld companies, as they attempt to deliver their cargoes and/or pick up product for shipment.

This is my 49th hand-generated “System of the Day” using the Traveller5 rules. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.
This world’s name was taken from that great scifi book series, The Dumarest Saga, written by E. C. Tubb, and published from 1967 to 2008. I make no claim to the name; I am only using it as an homage to a series which heavily influenced me (and, according to legend, Traveller itself).
This system was generated by hand with a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years, using the Traveller5 rules. Feel free to use this system in your own campaigns, but please do not publish them for profit, nor publish without obtaining prior permission. Thank you!

As always, comments and input are appreciated. Keep On Travelling!
