Fendris is another unimportant, low population water world, with 98% of its surface covered by oceans. Land masses consist of various islands, located in numerous archipelagos. Most (80%) of these island are located in a wide band around the world’s equatorial region. As there is no true ‘continent’, there are a large number of islands.

Fendris might not be classified as a storm world, but its citizens would argue that designation, as the world seems to be constantly wracked by low grade storms, some of which can become quite severe. Most settlement areas are hit by at least 2-3 hurricanes per local year. Thus the prefered method of transport between settlements is via submarine. Even with this precaution there are usually several wrecks each year, and there is a growing list of missing subs.

Although Fendris is governed by a form of participatory democracy, actual participation in government is limited to landowners and owners of certain critical businesses. A growing number of land owners have taken up the banner of “preserve the habitats”, a conservation effort which focuses on saving a declining population of local birds, whose nesting areas have been devastated in past centuries. Though this has limited Fendris’ economic growth, the effort is apparently meeting with success, as the birds’ population levels are reported to be increasing. One downside of this, however, is an increase in the number of starship and small craft accidents, as these large avians are difficult to keep out of approach lanes, and their size makes hitting them quite dangerous to both bird and ship.

To counter this problem, The Assembly, Fendris’ governing body, is discussing efforts to relocate the world’s starport to a region not within normal ranges of these avians. However, this would increase travel times for tourists, passengers, and off world goods, increasing costs and reducing incomes from the tourist trade. The debates in The Assembly are becoming heated, and it seems little will be accomplished about the issue for some years to come.

An offworld corporation has set up an “illegal” operation on the system’s 7th planet. This goes counter to the government’s wishes and laws. The company did so anyway, expecting the government to eventually relent, as they were in no position to end the situation. This hasn’t gone as planned; the government, with full support of the citizenry, has banned the corporation’s employees and products from the world. This has hurt the corporation’s profit margin heavily, as Fendris relied on that corporation’s imports for its submarine fleets. But the government had planned ahead, signing new (if slightly more expensive) contracts with one of that corporation’s major rivals. Not only has this hurt the original corporation’s bottom line, it has greatly improved prospects for the rival corporation, a minor company now enjoying a surge in growth. There are rumors being spread around about a possible “trade war” on the horizon, though investigations have turned up nothing but rumors and hearsay to this point.

ADVENTURING OPPORTUNITIES – A small list of potential situations. Each must be fleshed out by the GM.

1- A storm has caused another transport submarine to go missing. There were several passengers aboard, one of whom is an important politician for the world government. Players who have a ship will be asked to help locate the sub and attempt to rescue the passengers and crew. Can they save the day? And was it really an accident, or did someone sabotage the submarine?

2- Trade War: One of the involved corporations is seeking to improve its position with the local government. The players are hired by one of these corporations to exact revenge on their rivals, or investigate a series of “accidents” which are plaguing one company’s operations.

3- An environmental group hires the players to investigate the deaths of Fendris’ endangered avians. A number of these huge flyers have died near a remote island, and the group does not have enough personnel to investigate the situation. Is the situation normal, and just a result of local conditions? Is someone killing the magnificent flyers, perhaps a hunting party? Or is something/someone hidden on the off-limits island?

This is my 55th hand-generated “System of the Day” entry, using the Traveller5 (T5) rules, from Far Future Enterprises. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.

——————————

This world’s name was taken from that great scifi book series, The Dumarest Saga, written by E.C. Tubb, and published from1967 to 2008. I make no claim to this world name; I use it only as an homage to a series which heavily influenced me (and, according to legend, Traveller itself).

This system was generated by hand, using a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years, and using the Traveller5 (T5) rules set. Feel free to use this system in your own campaigns. Permission is granted to publish these results, as long as the copyrights of Far Future Enterprises are not violated, and no money is charged for them.

As always, comments and input are appreciated.

KEEP ON TRAVELLING!

    1. Anything from he could have been traveling back home (it is the main method of local transit), he (or she) was en route to a session of the Assembly for an important vote, or on the way to an investigation. Basically, GM call for whatever situation grabs the player’s interest.
