System of the Day #60 – Elmouturn

Elmouturn is a very important world in the region, and its impact is felt even beyond the surrounding systems. Elmouturn’s Navy patrols nearby systems in force to deter piracy, ensuring the safe travels of its influential merchant fleet, as well as legitimate merchant vessels of other worlds. Many of its neighbors now welcome the patrols, but were initially wary of Elmouturn’s intentions, fearing a hostile takeover of the region. To date, these fears have been unfounded, and their ships and patrols have never caused any sort of incident with Elmoiturn’s neighbors. The only times borders have been violated have been during pursuit of fleeing hostile (usually pirate) vessels. Indeed, Elmouturn’s ship crews are always respectful and careful to ensure no local violations of laws occur even during their rare local shore leaves.

While Elmouturn is not an industrial world, it still produces high quality, high technology goods, and its factories produce goods tailored to specific markets. One aspect of its economic policy, which still shocks most regional economists, is Elmouturn does NOT flood the markets of its neighbors with mass produced, inexpensive products. It seems the world wants strong neighboring economies, rather than controlled markets. Elmouturn also actively engages in technical support for these same neighbors, as well as assistance during times of disaster.

Several other worlds in the system are settled. Alatar, the planetoid belt in the next orbit out from Elmounturn, was at one point a breakaway colony. Years of diplomacy, rather than invasion, combined with economic assistance, have turned the former adversary into a staunch ally.

Kauket lies in the system’s 7th orbit. Its three governments went their separate ways soon after declaring their independence from Elmouturn, and have been at odds with each other ever since. Wars have occurred between them, and Elmouturn’s government has had a difficult time remaining neutral towards each, while attempting to broker peace between them.

Yocury, a former mining colony, lies in the far companion system. It is now an independent government. While friendly with its neighbors, it also maintains strict independence from Elmouturn. It is suspected by some Yocury’s government may be attempting to form a secret alliance to counter Elmouturn’s dominance of the region, but these appear to be merely rumors. Yocury doesn’t have the economic, technological, nor population base to offer any sort of serious challenge towards its neighbors.

This is my 60th hand-generated “System of the Day” entry, using the Traveller5 (T5) rules, from Far Future Enterprises. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.


This system was generated by hand, using a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years, and using the Traveller5 (T5) rules set. Feel free to use this system in your own campaigns.
