For most commercial ships and tourists, Palarth is a backwater system, in all meanings of the word. Little of commercial value is produced on Palarth, and the world’s ecology is anything but useful for human (and most other) life forms. The world does have significant (if difficult to reach) mineral resources, most of which lie untapped.
Palarth is of great interest to a particular subset of normal human culture, however – the underworld, the downtrodden, the down on their luck, and the criminal. Palarth is a haven for those hiding from others. It is a sale point for stolen property – including starships, military weapons – even sophonts. If you have items to sell, and don’t wish to explain where you got them, Palarth is the place to sell them. If you’re looking for a cheap part, or a specialized weapon, and aren’t worried about the source, Palarth is the place to go. As always, “Let the buyer beware”. Many sellers are honest to a point, though they’ll drive a hard bargain. Many more aren’t so scrupulous, and will con the unwary without a second thought.
As with any such location in human space, such places are dangerous – and Palarth is no exception. If you visit, come armed, travel in groups, and always watch your back. There is law and order here, but it applies only in the wealthy, protected neighborhoods, where the rich, the powerful reside, surrounded by walls, sensors, and guards. Although most people here are armed, this is usually limited to knives and handguns. Running around the concourses with military weapons and full battle armor is frowned upon, and will earn a rare visit by Palarth Security.
There are two other settled worlds in the system. The first is a frozen iceball, a small world orbiting the companion star. This world’s slightly radioactive environment provides “just enough” additional heat to make the world barely habitable, but it is not a pleasant experience. The other is a small vacuum world near Palarth. This barren world was originally a mining outpost. It has grown, however, as a counter to Palarth itself. Non-natives here tend to be those who managed to get away from Palarth, and are working the mines, hoping to get out of the system some day.

This is my 69th hand-generated “System of the Day” entry, using the Traveller5 (T5) rules, from Far Future Enterprises. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.
This system was generated by hand, using a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years, and using the Traveller5 (T5) rules set. Feel free to use this system in your own campaigns. Permission is granted to publish these results, as long as the copyrights of Far Future Enterprises are not violated, and no money is charged for them.
As always, comments and input are appreciated.
