System of the Day #78 – Pangritz

Pangritz is a resource poor world; only the presence of greater resources in the belts and gas giants of the system offer reprieve. As a result the industries of Pangritz are very efficient – perhaps the most efficient encountered in human space. The world’s high technology capability is also another big factor in the economy’s efficiency.

Pangritz has two separate governments, each ruling about half of the world’s 7.3 million citizens. These governments are split along philosopical lines, rather than other potential differences, and the two societies get along surprisingly well. Taxes and such are relatively even, with only minor differences, and many larger corporations employ citizens from both in somewhat equal numbers.

The system’s starport is run by a joint committee, and is essentially independent, though it has strict rules and guidelines it must adhere to. Starship construction is handled by a separate corporation, which is not involved in running the starport nor its highport. Indeed, starship construction takes place on Pangritz’ outer moon.

Starships constructed here are as efficient as the corporation which builds them, and they are in high demand; their ships are well worth the high prices a buyer must pay, even for used vessels. Indeed, many ship owners bring their older ships here for overhauls; the yards of Pangritz have been able to solve issues which have given other yards fits.

While this may seem to be an ideal system in some ways, Pangritz does have one big problem. One of its key resource centers is the planetoid belt in its companion star system. The miners there have declared their independence from Pangritz, and are attempting to enforce an embargo against the world, until their demands are met. Not all belt miners agree with this schism, and there is apparently a great deal of tension in their new society. In addition, rumors are leaking out that all is not what it seems in the belt. There are whispers of pirates having been behind the change in government, and there are some reports of strange (unknown) ship sightings, though these have not been confirmed. A number of ships have been reported missing in the region. Again, these disappearances have not been confirmed, What has occurred, and what will transpire, remains to be seen.

ADVENTURING OPPORTUNITIES – A small list of potential situations. Each must be fleshed out by the GM.

1. Delays. The players have stopped at Pangritz for their annual ship overhaul. Unfortunately, there is a long wait for space, as a major corporation in the region has just added five more ships to its overhaul order. This has caused a delay of several weeks, which will ruin the players’ scheduled departure date, and potentially void a valuable contract, ruining their reputation. Can the players find a way out of this potential disaster? Will bribery be necessary? Can they negotiate a deal with the corporation, which just “happens” to have a dangerous job they need performed?

This is my 78th hand-generated “System of the Day” entry, using the Traveller5 (T5) rules, from Far Future Enterprises. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.

This world’s name was taken from that great scifi book series, The Dumarest Saga, written by E.C. Tubb, and published from1967 to 2008. I make no claim to this world name; I use it only as an homage to a series which heavily influenced me (and, according to legend, Traveller itself).
This system was generated by hand, using a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years, and using the Traveller5 (T5) rules set. Feel free to use this system in your own campaigns. Permission is granted to publish these results, as long as the copyrights of Far Future Enterprises are not violated, and no money is charged for them.
As always, comments and input are appreciated.
