Gerdr is a very important world in the region. Its 16.7 billion population and extremely efficient industrial society is a serious force to be reckoned with, economically. It is fortunate for the world’s neighbors, indeed, that the world has not had its collective eyes on military expansion.
This may change, however. The world’s new Leader, with full support of the citizenry and industrial leaders, is finalizing plans to improve the world’s major starport, as well as construct a sizable construction yard on the world’s inner moon. Funds and resources are also being allocated to a near future construction boom, according to recent reports. When asked about these concerns, the Leader replied, “People are too panicky, and always looking for trouble where there isn’t likely to be any. It is human nature. Our society needs new markets, and we can’t rely on other world’s fleets to provide us with suitable markets and reliable transportation. It isn’t healthy for the state, so we must construct our own merchant fleets. And to accomplish this goal, we need to improve our world’s technology, which can only be accomplished through improvements in the education process.” The Leader was also quoted as saying media types are always missing the obvious, or ignoring it for their own benefit, rather than what benefits society.
The system’s distant planetoid belt (in the 10th orbit) is a rich, productive belt. It has been mined for years, and is dotted with numerous settlements supporting the miners and mining industries. There is frequent traffic in the settled areas, and Gerdr’s Navy maintains constant, roaming patrols to deter piracy. The last reported pirate attack was over 10 years ago, though they can’t be everywhere,
The rest of the system has been largely ignored, though fairly complete surveys have been conducted and maintained. The Navy does make occasional sweeps through the rest of the system to discourage potential pirate attacks, but concentrates most of its efforts areound Gerdr, the planetoid belt, and the system’s two gas giants, where most ships travel.
ADVENTURING OPPORTUNITIES – A small list of potential situations. Each must be fleshed out by the GM.
1. Rescue. While travelling to the system’s planetoid belt, authorities send a message “requesting” the player’s ship investigate a distress signal. Over 2 day’s travel distant, the players’ ship is closest to the reported location by several days. When they arrive in the area, it takes several hours to locate the vessel. It is completely unpowered with no life signs. There are no other vessels detected in the area, and there are no signs any battle occcurred. Can the players remain safe while uncovering this mystery?
