Nabanus is an unpleasant, low tech world. Though it lies in its primary star’s habitable zone, the lack of water, combined with a very thin, tainted atmosphere, makes life here unpleasant, to say the least. It is not surprising then, that Nabanus’ population has never expanded much beyond current levels. The world has decent resources available (other than water, of course), but barely any infrastructure to support extraction of those resources.
Much of the world’s population is centered around the capital city and starport, though a fairly high percentage of the populace resides in “the barrens”, a collective term used to describe much of the planet. Those who do choose this lifestyle (or are born into it) are some of the toughest, resourceful, and most independent people to be found in human space. They must be, in order to survive here, and earn anything resembling a living.
It is theorized by some that Nabanus could become a source of various in-demand minerals, if only someone would invest in the world’s infrastructure. This is unlikely to happen any time soon, however; there seems to be no point in doing so, from most points of view.
