Pastea (pas-TAY-ah) is a hellish backwater world. Though it orbits its primary star in the habitable zone, conditions here are anything but pleasant. Most of the world’s water sources are tied up in a series of small, dirty ‘lakes’ near the main towns, as well as two very small icy areas on the world’s poles. Pastea has an extreme axial tilt, and these polar ice regions appear and disappear with the seasons. For obvious reasons, ocean (and ice) refueling for starships is prohibited (and enforced by a small mercenary company armed with fighter craft). This is usually not an issue, however, as there are four gas giants in the system. Pastea’s downport (there is no orbital component, other than the usual navigation and communication satellites) sells unrefined fuel at standard prices, but adds a 75% surcharge to refined fuel sales.
Though Pastea’s current leader is popular, cracks are beginning to show in his leadership as conditions do not improve for the average citizen. To combat potential problems (for instance, the citizens rising up and trying to oust him), he has instituted “martial law” on the world – at least in the main settled areas; the backwater and frontier regions of Pastea are too dangerous to go around unarmed.
