System of the Day #101 – Candara

The original colony on Candara was abandoned over a century ago, when a stellar flare decimated the world’s original infrastructure. There are still signs of these old settlements, though they are little more than rubble and crumbling structures at this point. There have been no new stellar flares since that fateful event, and currently the primary star is showing no signs of more flares in the foreseeable future.

A new group has settled Candara, intent on “making it work”. To help accomplish this, and increase the colony’s chances of surviving another flare event, the new colonists are burrowing into a thick mountain (which is sheltered behind other, higher mountains), as a “failsafe”, while still residing on the surface. How effective this will turn out remains to be seen, though it is likely to be much more effective when more money is poured into the world’s infrastructure.

Currently Candara’s new settlers require a fair bit of support from offworld sources. It is hoped that, in the near future, they can become fully self sufficient. There are enough resources in the system that the world could become a productive one, contributing to the region’s economy.

Surprisingly, Candara’s ecological system survived that flare well, and there are  increasing signs it has survived many such events in the world’s past. This has given the new colonists hope for their future, and has also renewed scientific interest in this otherwise nondescript world.

As for the remainder of the system, there is little to note. A single planetoid belt is close to the primary star (orbit #1), but it has been mined off-and-on for several centuries, and new planetoids (and their potential ores) are becoming more difficult to locate. There are few other worlds worth noting, or worth colonizing.

This world’s name was taken from that great scifi book series, The Dumarest Saga, written by E.C. Tubb, and published from1967 to 2008. I make no claim to this world name; I use it only as an homage to a series which heavily influenced me (and, according to legend, Traveller itself).
