The world of Mallach wasn’t initially settled for its chemical resources, nor for its potential ores. No, it was settled because of a con.
A group of settlers was searching for a new colony world. They encountered an explorer with data for a Terran Prime world (Mallach). The explorer and his company had plenty of data and witnesses backing up the claim. A deal was struck, and the colonists headed for their new home.
They were shocked when they arrived. Mallach is not a Terran Prime world – far from it. Arriving with worn out colony ships, they were forced to remain, settling on Mallach and making due. The colonists survived, and eventually thrived, though life on Mallach isn’t easy.
Within the last century a colony has been established on the “habitable” world in orbit 1. This colony was intended to be a farming colony, supplementing Mallach’s food resources. There have been unexpected environmental and compatibility issues, however, which have combined to reduce the colony’s efectiveness. Research into a solution is ongoing.
Visitors to Mallach must be aware of the existence of the world’s system of honor. A “Code Duello” exists, the main emphasis of their system being honesty. Cheats, con artists, liars, and so forth, are not tolerated here. Anyone (including offworlders) found to have violated the code is subject to a potential duel to the death. Most citizens of Mallach are skilled with swords, and almost every citizen is always armed.

This world’s name was taken from that great scifi book series, The Dumarest Saga, written by E.C. Tubb, and published from 1967 to 2008. I make no claim to this world name; I use it only as an homage to a series which heavily influenced me (and, according to legend, Traveller itself).
