Driest is another unimportant backwater world. Originally settled to mine a rare resource, it has since been ‘abandoned’ by the companies which established it. This event was not of their choosing, however. A number of terrorist/activist attacks, made by determined agents, damaged the companies’ equipment beyond cost effective repair. The system was also seeing a rise in pirate attacks. Unable to withstand the two pronged assault on their resources, the companies pulled out.

Since that time the world has become a haven for criminals, pirates seeking to hide, and those individuals wishing not to be found. The single large settlement has numerous entrances, and is a large, open cave system, with numerous sealed structures and several ‘public’ domes, which function as homes for the desperate, as well as being “open air” markets. There are numerous competing factions, each controlling a specific area of the habitat. Most of the public/open areas are too wild to be controlled by any one group, though they do try. Conflict is a fact of life in these areas, though most people can easily avoid it.

The system is rumored to be rich in resources, and it is also believed the ousted mining companies want the system’s vagrants to be cleared out. There may be some truth to this; several years ago a mercenary company moved into the settlement and attempted to take over. The fight was epic, and once-sided, and barely 40% of the unit escaped. They did cause a lot of damage during the unit’s short escape, however, cracking one of the public domes and damaging a number of sealed buildings. The crackeddome has not been repaired, and is the home of the truly desperate.

This is my 108th hand-generated “System of the Day” entry, using the Traveller5 (T5) rules, from Far Future Enterprises. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.

——————————
This world’s name was taken from that great scifi book series, The Dumarest Saga, written by E.C. Tubb, and published from 1967 to 2008. I make no claim to this world name; I use it only as an homage to a series which heavily influenced me (and, according to legend, Traveller itself).

This system was generated by hand, using a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years, and using the Traveller5 (T5) rules set. Feel free to use this system in your own campaigns. Permission is granted to publish these results, as long as the copyrights of Far Future Enterprises are not violated, and no money is charged for them.
