Chulnides was established solely as a refueling station along a minor trade route. It has continued in that role to the present day, with little having changed other than an increase in the starport’s capabilities as the trade route increased in importance. Over 80% of local jobs are directly related to the starport and its mission. Although there is very little law here, not much actually occurs in regards to purported illegal (in other systems) activity; while there is plenty of traffic on most days, few ships remain at the port longer than necessary to refuel, resupply, and stretch the crew’s legs. Most visiting ships are not inspected by customs; there is little need when the cargoes aren’t being unloaded and delivered here. In this regard, the system could be considered a “safe haven” for pirates in the region; their presence is tolerated, as long as they don’t stay more than a few hours, and conduct no business (of any type) in the system. A defensive agreement is in place with a nearby system (where the local owning company originated), and there are navy patrols near Chuldines, as well as the occasional picket ship.
The world itself is uninviting. A heavy metallic taint makes the atmosphere unhealthy to breathe; known long-term effects include lung cancer, as well as esophageal damage. Goggles and filters must be worn at all times to avoid the effects, as there is no protective dome over the settlement. This metallic taint also tends to interfere with ship and ground-based sensors, making landing attempts, “Interesting” during the world’s occasional dust storm. Most local’s clothing is heavily tainted by the atmosphere, and has a dull metallic sheen. Most don’t bother to remove this effect; some consider it a badge of honor; most realize it will just come back within a day or two after being out in the atmosphere.
Attempts to settle Chunides (beyond the region around the starport) have been made, all ending in frustrated failure; few crops grow here, and few non-native animals can withstand the conditions for more than a generation or two. It has been several centuries since the last attempt, and no new efforts are even being considered, even amongst so-called “desperate” groups, looking to relocate; they may be in dire needs, but some efforts aren’t worth pursuing…

This is my 128th hand-generated “System of the Day” entry, using the Traveller5 (T5) rules, from Far Future Enterprises. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.
This system was generated by hand, using a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years, and using the Traveller5 (T5) rules set. Feel free to use this system in your own campaigns.
