Althea orbits a large gas giant with a violent atmosphere. Ship captains are highly advised to NOT risk skimming this giant’s extremely turbulent atmosphere. Even with this warning, there is always “that one” ship captain who thinks he can handle it, and there are one or two unfortunate ships each year which are lost to the giant.

Althea itself is a world with 99.5% of its surface covered by deep oceans. The few land masses available are entirely covered with structures constructed using off world techniques and technology, as local construction techniques simply can’t withstand the world’s frequent harsh storms. Visiting ships must be able to land directly on the water, or use local water-capable shuttles. (These are imported from and maintained by companies from a nearby world at great expense). As there are few warehouse facilities on Althea, there are always cargoes being shipped out which must reach market fairly quickly, as local technology isn’t high enough to prolong product shelf life beyond a few weeks. Much of the produce is shipped to nearby worlds, where it is then further processed, or consumed by the local populations.

Being a water world, Althea is of course known for its wonderful seafood products, which are exported to other nearby systems (as mentioned above). Althea is also noted for its frequent and violent storms, which can arise on short notice (there is no adequate weather prediction system here, as local technology isn’t sufficient), making landings and even cargo loading “interesting” at times…

NOTE: These systems, as generated, are generic. Referees will need to modify the system and descriptions to fit their campaign needs.

ADVENTURING OPPORTUNITIES – A small list of potential situations. Each must be fleshed out by the GM.

1 MAYDAY! Sigh. It has happened yet again. Another ruthless ship captain has attempted to refuel from Althea’s gas giant, and discovered his ship cannot handle the atmosphere. The ship is close to reaching the point of no return, and there are supposedly several important personages aboard. Can the PCs manage a rescue before the giant claims another vessel? Will they even risk their own ship to make the dangerous attempt?

2. HURRICANE. The player’s ship was landing to load cargo from a large city ship, when it detected an approaching hurricane. The city itself should be able to withstand it, as they are used to this sort of thing. But there are only a few hours available to fill the ship’s cargo hold. Can the group manage to get their ship loaded before the storm hits? Was their quick prediction of the storm’s path and speed accurate? Or will the storm begin to arrive as they are in the middle stages of loading the cargoes? Good luck!

This is my 132nd hand-generated “System of the Day” entry, using the Traveller5 (T5) rules, from Far Future Enterprises. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.

This system was generated by hand, using a set of dice I have owned for over 30 years, and using the Traveller5 (T5) rules set. Feel free to use this system in your own campaigns. Permission is granted to publish these results, as long as the copyrights of Far Future Enterprises are not violated, and no money is charged for them.
