Being one of five moons orbiting a violent gas giant, Krantz was settled for its location (in a very close orbit to the gas giant) and its easy to collect atmospheric chemicals. The giant being what it is, very few ship captains bother with refueling in its turbulent atmosphere; when Krantz’s starport sells inexpensive refined fuel (90% of standard cost), and even refined fuel (125% standard cost), the risk associated with frontier refueling isn’t considered worth the effort. Krantz’ unrefined fuel is one of the components left over from refining processes when collecting certain chemicals out of its atmosphere.
Krantz itself needs support from offworld (higher tech) sources to maintain its protection from local conditions; even with these added expenses, the world’s industries still collect a tidy profit from its prominent atmospheric refining industries.
Note the world’s law level – or lack of one. The usual societal laws are in place. But while weapons aren’t prohibited, you will almost never see a weapon outside of the starport and refineries. No resident of Krantz is willing to allow even a tiny risk of suit rupture, or causing a catastrophe in a residential or common area. This doesn’t mean the world and its citizens are unprotected. Indeed, the atmosphere itself is usually quite enough to ward off potential attackers. Most facilities are embedded deep underground within the few mountain ranges which were thrust up out of the acidic ‘seas’ eons ago. And all facilities are designed in a manner which prevents casual access to unauthorized individuals to most areas, be they residences, access tunnels, or refineries.
This system may have abundant resources, but it does not have many planetary bodies. In the Far Companion system, a single world has been colonized. Initially this was for easy access to rich copper and platinum deposits. A recent discovery of a major lanthanum deposit has spurred great interest in the system by regional corporations, and a bidding war for access to the mines (or at least its ores, once processed) is anticipated. In addition, at least one unit of contract defense ships (star mercenaries) has been brought to the companion system, both to protect the system (which is too low tech to mount much of a space defense force) and to keep the peace between several mining corporations; brawls have already been reported between rival mining groups.
