Although the system which holds the world of Conoe has plenty of worlds, the system is rather resource poor. This has inhibited the society’s tech development. Conoe itself is a decent world for human habitation, but it is “rather hot and humid”, possessing a very tropical climate. The atmosphere is breathable, but is tainted by various forms of pollen, much of which originates from the world’s immense floating vegetation “islands”. These form a number of distinct ecologies, some of which are being studied by offworld scientists. One other item of note: Conoe has a ring, which is very prominent in the night sky, owing to the world’s closer proximity to the primary star. Additionally, Conoe’s single moon is very large. Even though it is in a distant orbit, its gravitational pull greatly affects the world’s tides, and has an impact on the world’s already impressive weather patterns.
Conoe itself has undergone a series of recent “brushfire” wars. Its thousands of islands are controlled and fought over by six governments, competing for resources and expansion room. Until the last few wars these governments were relatively equal in strength and power, but now there are two which have become relative power houses. It is suspected these two governments are receiving offworld assistance, though there is no direct evidence for this claim. Why offworld corporations would be interested in this world’s politics is a popular topic of discussion, as there is little for them to be concerned about on Conoe. Because of this most people believe the speculation regarding offworld interference is just that – speculation.
There is little to recommend the rest of the system, owing to its overall lack of resources. Because there is no gas giant within the system, most ships refuel in Conoe’s vast oceans. However, ships which do so are advised to ensure their fuel filters are up to the task, as the local pollen taints have been known to clog up fuel intakes. There is a sometimes-manned research and observation station on the system’s third world, a storm world which has actual lulls in its violent weather seasons. When manned there are less than 20 personnel on planet, and a ship is held in orbit for quick evacuations, “just in case”.
The very, very distant rad world in the 14th orbit was only discovered a decade ago, after a passenger liner misjumped; the world’s presence was suspected, but it hadn’t been located, and it caused the liner to misjump. It took weeks to mount a rescue effort, mainly as there were no other vessels in the system at the time, and half of the crew and passengers perished before being rescued. Several families of those who perished are interested in constructing a memorial to the victims on the frozen world, but have so far been unable to muster up support for the effort.
