Ellinda is a very large world, with a high gravity. Its surface is entirely covered by an expansive, deep ocean, which deters human colonization.
A deep survey of Ellinda has been completed within the last year. The discovery of a potentially large lanthanum deposit (a necessary component of the Jump Drive) deep under the waves has convinced a major company in the region to begin exploring the possibility of mining the world. The depths of the deposit, and the pressures involved with those depths, will be a significant challenge to the company’s efforts. If they can overcome these serious obstacles, the company stands to make billions in profit in the coming decades.
Recent surveys in the system’s widespread planetoid belts also hint at plentiful resources. It is rumored a rival company(s) is considering moving into these belts. To forestall potential conflicts, negotiations have begun in a nearby system, which are being closely monitored by analysts. The success or failure of these negotiations, and of the deep mining efforts, will impact the region’s economies for at least the next few decades, and possibly centuries.
