Ladus is a tidally-locked world, orbiting a dim red star. The world has a dense atmosphere, tainted by large quantities of water vapor and pollen. This pollen is created by a particularly aggressive ocean vegetation, similar to various forms of floating seaweeds, and has been known to cause cancer in approximately 10-15% of exposed humans. Research by offworld medical experts has confirmed that wearing some sort of respirator or filter is sufficient to greatly reduce the risk. Even a cloth face covering has been proven to be sufficient. Unfortunately, most people are unable to go a full day without at least partial exposure, minimizing effectiveness.
With the world’s high density atmosphere, and its proximity to the primary star, the tidally-locked world is prone to violent storms and high tidal surges. Most inhabited areas are located in larger island groups, and have some natural protection from storm surges. Where this protection doesn’t exist, or is inadequate, additional measures have been taken, usually in the form of massive sea walls, or series of underwater structures, designed to reduce or dissipate the worst effects of these surges.
The system itself is somewhat poor in known resources, even though there are a large number of worlds present. Several groups of independent-minded people have established very small colonies, usually mining efforts, on several bodies in the system. A larger colony has been established on the system’s most distant world (in the 15th orbit). Why this (or any) group would colonize this world is unknown, as almost no heat reaches the world, and there are very few available resources. The 2000 or so residents keep to themselves, surviving in the unbearably cold conditions with almost no outside assistance.
