System of the Day #168 – Yuanka

Yuanka is a very important industrialized world in the region, and indeed may be the most important location within the entire Sector. Its very high population (43 billion) and extreme technology (16, far beyond the Sector average) make Yuanka a serious force in politics and economics.
The world’s starport is currently being expanded, as well as upgraded; it is expected the construction will be done within several years. Once complete, Yuanka’s powerful industries will be able to construct its high tech starships at much greater rates. This has nearby governments very concerned, and fearful of a hostile takeover – military or economic.
From recent reports, they have little to worry about. The government may be popular, but The Council does not have the full fledged support of all the world’s citizens. Indeed, fully 15% of the populace are registered supporters of various Opposition Parties, and a full 3% are known to be clamoring for the government’s collapse. This makes for a tense and interesting local political situation, one that appears to be heating up. The government has responded in recent years by “ratcheting up” laws, so much so outsiders claim it has become a true police state. How well these draconian laws fare remains to be seen. It is feared that a civil war will tear not only Yuanka apart, but the region’s economy as well.
The system itself is sparse, having one very distant companion star system, with a handful of worlds between them. Only one other world is inhabited, a dry world orbiting the companion star in its habitable zone. Scientists and technicians are currently attempting to planetform this world, to improve local growing conditions. This is made very difficult, however, as there is no easy source of water within either system. A program is already underway, shifting icy planetoids out of the system’s Oort Cloud. Several ice chunks are already en route, and scheduled to impact the world in less than a year, with 1 or 2 chunks to hit each month. Thrill seekers are already planning trips to this colony, eager for the best view of the impacts as possible. Local traffic control is already anticipating a large volume of ships for each scheduled impact, and are already dreading the challenge, according to recent rumors and reports.

This world’s name was taken from that great scifi book series, The Dumarest Saga, written by E.C. Tubb, and published from 1967 to 2008. I make no claim to this world name; I use it only as an homage to a series which heavily influenced me (and, according to legend, Traveller itself).
