Relatively poor in resources, Chahiri is a backwater system. Located nowhere near a major trade route, the world languishes in obscurity. However, the world does produce an amazing array of products; being far from markets and assistance, the local economy is very efficient and self supporting.
One reason Chahiri is able to produce as much food as it does is its Valleys. The world may be small with a very thin atmosphere, but most of the world’s air is “trapped” in a series of deep valleys covering approximately 5% of the world’s surface. These valleys allow the local citizens to enjoy a relatively normal, open air existence – at least in those valleys located in the world’s Temperate Zone. The few Valleys located on the world’s hot side are not utilized, while some mining occurs in the cold zone Valleys.
In the past, each Valley was relatively independent, as each was separated from the others. However in recent decades, large construction projects have created a series of tunnels, connecting several of the Valleys to one another with efficient rail networks. Each new tunnel has increased trade and efficiency of the connected Valley societies, and the tunnels, once seen as a boondoggle, are now very popular with most citizens. Currently two more tunnel projects are underway, with more planned in future years.
