With more than 99% of its surface covered with oceans, and a population of over 800 million people (only around 20 million of them live in orbital cities), Kreni is overpopulated. New habitats cannot be built fast enough (either in orbit, or under the ocean surface) for the growing population, and a housing crisis is looming. It is estimated the society will run out of living space within a decade, and everyone is growing desperate to find a solution.
Several factors hold promise for a quick solution. First, the leadership has lost the confidence of the citizenry; the leaders are desperate to find or create a solution to this crisis, and are working tirelessly towards a solution. Second, though Kreni is almost entirely covered with water, a good percentage of that area is shallow, with depths averaging less than 100 meters in most areas. Third, even with two sizable moons, the world sees little in the way of drastic seismic activity; Kreni’s tectonic plates are remarkably stable. And lastly, the system holds good resources. These factors give the citizens and leadership hope that a solution will be reached soon.
There is also the potential to colonize the drier world in the system’s 4th orbit, though most people are against this; the climate of this world is less than inviting, and the atmosphere is extremely thin. The government is considering plans to planetform this world, though if feasible this would be for long-term expansion, as it would be completed far too late for the current crisis.
