Harmakhis is a fairly important world. The world’s ecology, deterred by a thin atmosphere and lack of water, never developed much beyond algae and fungus. When humans settled the world, they quickly introduced flora and fauna more suited to their needs. Unfortunately, it seems the local ecology wasn’t going to cooperate…
The world’s citizens have been in a constant struggle with the native lifeforms, which have apparently become rather invasive (it is unclear from the early surviving colony records whether this was an immediate problem, or if it developed as a reaction to humanity introducing new life). The steps needed to ensure locally grown foods are kept free of contamination makes costs exorbitant, and it has always been much easier to import food items. What local food which is grown has unique flavorings, making them a desired trade item on nearby worlds.
In addition to the farming issues, local spores can be dangerous to non-residents (who have adapted). These spores are spread during specific periods in Harmakhis’ long seasons, and it is fairly easy to be prepared for them (they are not an issue in other seasons, as they do not linger in the atmosphere); for most who are exposed the effects are similar to having a bad cold or allergies, though some cases trigger more severe reactions, including possible death. If a starship arrives during one of these periods, the ship must either remain in orbit (possibly for several weeks or even a month) waiting for the event to pass, or be prepared to endure extensive cleaning procedures.
