Long the center of this average stellar system, the world of Atam Vini has been plagued by nearly constant struggle and warfare between its differing societies. Only in recent years has the world ‘come together’ to any degree – and this mainly through societal attrition; there once were hundreds of smaller governments, some no more than a few hundred people, on the world’s single continent. Over time, most of these smaller societies were absorbed – or in many cases, wiped out – by their larger or more aggressive neighbors.
This nearly constant warfare has taken its toll on the world; the once burgeoning population (well over 25 million several centuries ago) has dwindled to a mere 3.4 million. In addition, it’s infrastructure has been decimated and its technology base has deteriorated drastically. These days, there are barely any usable roads connecting the remaining societies and their withered cities, and the world’s once efficient farm distribution system has deteriorated. Currently, the world’s only ‘saving grace’ is its low population; local farming is sufficient to feed everyone, but little remains to ship off planet.
Meanwhile, as the various governments of Atam Vini have nearly wiped themselves out of existence, other local governments and companies have moved into the system. The system’s three planetoid belts are being heavily mined out by companies from the region, and at least one new society has been established on a distant, if frozen, world. There are some who thing Atam Vini will eventually be upstaged by this outlying colony world, and predict the world will become a colony of another nearby system – whether they wish to or not.
