Anradus is a rich world with an aggressive legal code. Regulation is the mainstay of the local government, its reason for being, apparently. At least, that is the ‘vibe’ given off to those who must deal with the bureaucracy in any form – which is almost everyone on the planet, of course. Given how most bureaucracies tend to limit growth and economic development (that’s the general viewpoint in many societies), it is considered amazing the world has any money at all, much less the amount of wealth this world displays.
One major factor of this society’s wealth is its outsystem mines. Anradus’ wealthy elite maintains fairly productive mining activities in the system’s three extensive planetoid belts. These mines have provided a steady flow of cash for the elite, and the society overall, for a number of years. However, it appears the “good times” may be ending.
Anradus has faced problems with competition in the belts. Regional companies, more efficient and with higher technology, have been blatantly ignoring the world’s excessive regulations, and have been mining in the belts illegally. In addition, pirates in the region have begun raiding in recent years, drawn by the system’s wealth and general lack of high technology. Anradus’ government has responded by purchasing a fairly large fleet of higher technology patrol craft. This has reduced incidents of piracy, and forced a number of the illegal miners to move elsewhere (or just pay the taxes and fines). However, the purchase of these patrol ships has created a large drain on profits. While this was acceptable for a short while, the effects are now being seen even on the streets of Anradus, as some companies are going out of business, and incidents of homelessness are beginning to rise. It is believed that, barring some drastic measures or other event, the world’s economy could collapse within a decade…
NOTE: These systems, as generated, are generic. Referees will need to modify the system and descriptions to fit their campaign needs.
