Pondion is a prominent system in the region, owing to its fine starport, high technology, location near a major trade route, and abundant resources. The starport’s shipyards perform little new construction, but maintain a brisk business in upgrades, repairs, and overhauls. The world itself has a thin but breathable atmosphere, and sufficient water to support a wide variety of life. Much of the world is covered in deserts, however, owing to the lower levels of water. This has not impacted its agricultural industry one bit, and the world produces large quantities of grain for export to nearby worlds.
Pondion was initially colonized as a corporate effort, and this has not changed since; most people have found that necessary services, response times to events, and so forth, have been better managed in this manner, thought there have been issues with mismanagement and favoritism in the past.
Pondion is also known as the world with “loose import laws”, and low taxes. There are few restrictions on goods traded here, other than laws set up specifically to protect the world’s agriculture and ecology. Many large regional corporations have moved their headquarters here due to the open business climate and low taxes. Surprisingly, the system’s lack of trade restrictions has not resulted in high trade volumes of stolen goods. While trade is largely unregulated here, all trade activity (sales, etc) is registered with local authorities, and tracked specifically to prevent trade in pirated and stolen goods.
