Elmish is a minor agricultural world. The society compensates for its low population (well under a million people) with technology. Utilizing higher technology allows for a good level of agricultural output. Elmish is still developing its grain and farming agriculture, and currently relies on various fruits, as well as smoked meats, to maintain its exports. Having no real industry, however, they are forced to import (at high expense) much of the equipment needed.
For unknown reasons Elmish’s population rate is very low. This has always hampered development. There has always been resistance to allowing more settlers onto the world. Much of the resistance is based on tradition: the current social norms have been in place for centuries, and people do not like the idea of change. A recent pirate raid has altered this viewpoint, however, after a remote village was almost completely wiped out. People are worried, and may finally be considering allowing more people into the world. Discussions are ongoing.
Overall the system has excellent resource availability. Many locations in the system are being mined, with exports going to nearby industrial worlds. Several of these worlds are now growing at a rapid pace, and there is the added fear Elmish may soon become the backwater world in the system. This is another factor in many local residents reconsidering their stance on allowing more people into their society.

This world’s name was taken from that great scifi book series, The Dumarest Saga, written by E.C. Tubb, and published from 1967 to 2008. I make no claim to this world name; I use it only as an homage to a series which heavily influenced me (and, according to legend, Traveller itself).
