Saule is an extremely important, high technology industrial world. The stellar system provides only average (at best) availability of the resources needed for a thriving industrial economy; its two planetoid belts are being heavily mined and surveyed, but it is suspected the belt will play out sometime within a few decades. To this end, business and the government have been concentrating on ensuring future availability of these needed resources.
Saule’s shipyards construct a wide range of starships, but by far its most noted ship design is its SDBs. A wide variety of these iconic system defense boats are available for construction, with the most popular ones being from 200 to 600 tons (Td), as these are the easiest to transport. Indeed, Saule also offers a reliable transfer service, hauling a system’s new SDB to the desired system in a timely manner. It also offers these transport vessels for sale, of course. Both of these designs are popular due to their high tech level of contruction, which gives these vessels tremendous advantages in the field.
Surprisingly, Saule’s local Navy is rather small, though it has done its best to conceal this fact. Why it maintains so few defensive ships is unknown officially, but there has been widespread speculation. One theory states the government relies on the high tech edge of its defenders, while another states they just aren’t needed; no pirate attacks have occurred in the area for at least 30 years. And one wild theory claims the world’s leadership is amassing most of its “missing” SDBs in a nearby system, as it readies itself for a wave of conquest in neighboring systems. Such claims are laughed at by officials, stating the rumor mongers are trying to draw attention to themselves and their crackpot theories.
