Pkedi (‘Ke-dee) is a desert world which sustains little life, with this life being in early, primitive stages. Care was taken by the initial settlers, ensuring (mostly) no cross-contamination occurred with existing life forms. The lack of surface water has clearly hampered development on this world, or pushed it along a different path of evolution, and the world is often visited by scholars and researchers from other worlds, some of whom travel for months to conduct research.
As a whole, the system is widely known through the region as being a primary source of minerals (copper, iron, etc) for nearby industrial worlds. Local miners make extensive use of robotic and remote control equipment (imported, of course, from nearby worlds) to maintain a relatively high level of production. Most ores are shipped unprocessed, reducing their initial value. As most shipments are done by ships or companies under contract, this is not seen as a problem. Currently three locations are being extensively mined or survey: both planetoid belts, and the first planet orbiting the system’s companion star.
There is little else to draw visitors to the Pkedi system, so little other traffic is seen here. This in itself limits potential pirate activity, and few such attacks have occurred over the years, though a fairly strong (if low tech) patrol fleet of cutters is maintained.
