Arith is a small, dry world. Possessing a very thin atmosphere, few people venture outside of the various habitats and buildings, except as necessary. Around one half of the world’s residents live within  a few hundred miles of the capital city and port, with the rest residing in various small, scattered communities around Arith.
A number of worlds are inhabited in the system, with most of these being mining operations, colonies of “separatists”, or research facilities. It is interesting to note, however, that a potentially habitable world (orbit #5) is NOT settled. Several attempts to colonize this world have been made over the years, with each attempt ending in failure. One attempt was abandoned after its water supply failed. Another group departed after several years of crop failures. And one colony simply… disappeared. Vanished without a trace. The entire settlement, including the buildings. As a hundred or more people and their buildings do not just disappear, various theories have been proposed as to just what happened. These theories run the usual range: unknown alien attacks, buried by desert sands, and even a wild plot by the settlers to gain notoriety. What truly happened remains unknown to this day, even more than a century later.
