Philyra is a world which hasn’t changed much in recent years. Its population has remained steady, hovering around 26 million people, with very slow tech growth. Of course, considering the world’s corrosive atmosphere and unfriendly environment, the lack of population increase is not surprising. The society’s lack of cultural change, however, is another story.
Philyra has earned a nickname as, “The Unchanging World”. The world itself is geologically stable, with little change created by natural forces (this is unexpected, considering the world’s close proximity to its primary star), and the society has apparently molded itself to fit this local example. People here enjoy their life, and change little in their daily routines, going about their lives as they have for centuries. If questioned about this, most people will shrug, and say they like things as they are.
Fortunately, the system has large deposits of a critical element, necessary for jump drive operation – lanthanum. This is fortunate, as there are few other significant resources in the system which would draw interest from mining corporations. Some of these deposits have been located on Philyra itself, but most are in the system’s planetoid belt (orbit #6), where mining operations have been underway for almost two centuries without interruption. The belt is patrolled by a sizable fleet of higher technology cutters (suitably paid for and maintained by mining profits), ensuring the operations are not interrupted by competitors – or pirates.
