Elysius is some people’s idea of an ideal retirement setting – tropical, shirt sleeve environment, lots of people – but not too many – and low technology. Reality can be quite different, however.
In its past Elysius was controlled by a series of Dictators, some popular, some hated. A number of revolutions against their rule led to great loss of life and destruction, but eventually toppled the government. This resulted in several generations of rule by the local religious counsel, and a harsh period making the previous rule of dictators seem tame in comparison. This period in Elysius’ history stands out as one of the most brutal and unforgiving in recent history, not only on Elysius but in comparison to any other world within the region. Worker camps, correction camps, brutal prisons, and mass executions were the norm for at least a generation.
Fortunately, a revolution was successful in ousting the hated religious rulers. Most of the previous rulers and their enforcers were executed after lengthy, public trials. An estimate placed the number of people killed during the entire historical period at roughly 450 million (this was over several generations).
The last two generations have been a period of recovery. The newly formed government, a hold-over from the Trials, formed the basis for the replacement government, and has guided the society’s recovery from this tragic period. Where the society of Elysius goes from this point remains to be determined.
Meanwhile, a number of regional corporations moved into the system’s planetoid belts during this period, when the government(s) were preoccupied with events on Elysius. These companies have been steadily strip mining the belts, paying no taxes or fees to the local government. Of course, the government has no way to enforce any potential taxes. Now that the previous troubles on Elysius have been dealt with, there is talk about this issue in the government. How they will deal with it (and enforce their wishes on the matter) is an ongoing debate with no easy (or cheap) solutions…

This is my 244th hand-generated “System of the Day” entry, using the Traveller5 (T5) rules, from Far Future Enterprises. My goal is to publish one random system per day in 2020.
——————————
This world’s name was taken from that great scifi book series, The Dumarest Saga, written by E.C. Tubb, and published from 1967 to 2008. I make no claim to this world name; I use it only as an homage to a series which heavily influenced me (and, according to legend, Traveller itself).

This system was generated by hand, using my new Traveller dice and the Traveller5 (T5) rules set. Feel free to use this system in your own campaigns. Permission is granted to publish these results, as long as the copyrights of Far Future Enterprises are not violated, and no money is charged for them.
