Rodinia is a world which seems to be in a “constant” state of decay. The world’s distance inside the primary star’s large Jump Limit limits interaction with the outer universe, especially physical trade. This lack of, or difficult, trade is a contributing factor in the world’s lack of advancement. Adding to the situation, there are seven distinct social groups in the society, with varying levels of cooperation and distrust – unfortunately, mostly distrust between them. This has inhibited development (social and technological), producing a number of wars, disputes, and smoldering conflicts.
Rodinia has, naturally, seen better, more productive times, though it has been some centuries since there has been anything resembling a long period of peace on the world. The historical record which survives shows a pattern of “rise and fall” social and technoligical development. Each time the world has developed to an equivalent of around technology level 6 or 7, something happens to throw the world back into a state of distrust, conflict, and war.
The Rodinia stellar system has ample resources, according to several (admittedly much older) surveys. However, the inner system has never been realistically considered for exploitation. The immense distances from the primary star’s large Jump Limit restricts travel to in-system maneuver drives, and in the outer system even inhibits normal operations of maneuver drives. This translates to weeks (or more) of travel needed to reach the inner system worlds. It is far less expensive for companies to mine for resources in other systems. The only positive out of this situation is the resources will still be there, if and when Rodinia can “get together”, end its conflicts, and begin to develop as an interstellar society.
The very distant planetoid belt (orbit #14) is “officially” opposed to piracy. In reality it is unable to enforce anti-piracy measures. This is mainly due to the vast distances in this belt. But another factor is the government is potentially being controlled by local pirates behind the scenes. If this is truly the case, it will likely take a concerted effort by outside parties to remove the threat, one which will likely become a serious drain on resources in the region. At the current time there is little impact on local trade, so no other government or entity is considering intervention. As long as the situation doesn’t change, there is likely to be any such action.
