Zhang-Guo-Lau is a minor world. Very small in size, the light gravity has caused some issues for the descendants of the original settlers. Some of the problems experienced have also derived from local ecological system incompatibilities, which have caused reduced pregnancy rates, genetic damage, and other related issues. Over time, most of these issues have been overcome, or they have adapted, and the local population levels have been slowly rising over the past two generations.
Unfortunately, while these problems have been slowly dealt with, another problem has come to the forefront.
Competition.
Two distant, habitable worlds in the companion star system were colonized recently (within a generation or so) by a group from a nearby system. They claimed to be “refugees” at the time, but new evidence has been discovered which shows a concerted effort by a regional rival to move into the system.
These new communities adapted to their new homes quickly, and without the problems associated with Zhang-Guo-Lau. They have also received substantial support from their sponsor, in the form of technology, infrastructure, and new colonists. It is projected one of these new colony worlds will surpass Zhang-Guo-Lau in terms of population and importance, within one or two generations, and this has their government very concerned.
Unfortunately, projections currently show one of these worlds as surpassing Zhang-Guo-Lau as the most important world in the system within one, at most two generations. And for the moment there appears to be nothing they can do about it. Governments in neighboring systems are keeping a close eye on this system and its potential problems, as events here will undoubtedly have effects in neighboring worlds.
