Gabjaujas (pronounced “Ga-jow-jow) is a minor world. With a low technology base, the society manages to cope with their world’s tainted atmosphere (mostly dust, as well as pollen and microbes). Locals are well adjusted to the taints, and have adapted somewhat to them – still requiring dust masks during the worst of the dust storms, of course, but generally they have developed a “tough it out” attitude, and tend to make joking fun of visitors who can’t cope.
Other than these unique local differences, there is little to recommend the world itself; the weather is decent, local food is decent but unremarkable, and the starport is “barely there”. Other worlds in the system are being surveyed or mined by outside forces (corporations), though Gabjaujas sees little income from this activity.
The planetoid belt in the system’s 8th orbit is a source of continual confrontation and potential conflict between several competing mining firms. The conflicts were bad enough that each company sent in its own troops, or hired mercenaries, to protect their personnel and assets. A period of tense conflict over several years has now settled down to a “terse neutrality”, with no reported confrontations for at least a year. This contradicts the history of this area, as well as the relations of the companies involved (which detest each other, and have had conflicts in other system as well), and rumors are hinting at a possible recurrence of these conflicts in the near future.
