With no surface water, along with a low pressure, tainted atmosphere, Geshtinanna meets the definition of “hellworld”. The cold temperatures here don’t help one bit, either, making life on the planet truly “hellish”. As no normal (ie, human digestible) crops can grow here easily, locals must rely on small vat farming operations, supplemented with meat gained from compatible local wildlife. Most local lifeforms, though, are at best incompatible with human digestions, with about 15% being outright poisonous to humans, and a similar percentage being edible for humans. Those animals which can be eaten by humans are limited in number, and require exacting processing before they can be consumed. Because of these issues, there are almost none of the usual “pets” associated with human settlement – no cats, dogs, etc. Indeed, the usual rodent and insect problems associated with most human settlements are almost non existent here. There are a few small, local animals which have been tamed (to an extent), filling in this void. None of these ‘companion’ animals can survive easily outside of Geshtinanna’s environment, however, and are rarely (if ever) seen off-world.
Geshtinanna’s government is rated as a civil service bureaucracy, with “only the best” being allowed to help manage the world. In reality very few locals receive much of an education, and a small number of wealthier families (local wealth being a relative term, of course) have been almost forced to run the government. This has given those families too much power, though usually the other families (or rarely, a neutral government agency) will work to prevent excesses.
