Pictoris is a world with far less than 1% of its surface being land. There is so little land most visiting starships must land on the water, or use shuttle craft to ferry passengers and cargo. Being tidally locked in orbit around a gas giant, it is fortunate, indeed, that the world’s few islands are located in or near the “interface zone” between sides of the planet. This makes it bearable to live on the world, but also subjects the inhabitants to very strong storms.
Being a very unimportant world (some would call it a backwater), there are few reasons to visit Pictoris, though there is some suitable “tourist draws” – mainly some surfing, deep sea diving, and of course deep ocean fishing. All three of these activities can be rather dangerous, given the world’s weather patterns, and there are several deaths each year related to this issue, in spite of numerous precautions.
Unsurprisingly, given local conditions and Pictoris’ “lowly” status in the region, there are few actual visitors to the planet, and only a handful of scheduled tramp freighters every month. This low level of traffic has also hampered exploration and development of other worlds in the system, and there are no other settled worlds here.
