Botai is a world who’s society wants as little contact with the outside universe as possible. At least, that’s the conclusion visitors may draw when attempting to visit the world.
There is no starport. Indeed, there are no officially designated landing locations. As ninety-three percent of the world’s surface is covered by oceans, most available land is used for dwellings, farmland, and what industry the society has, or is too steep for other uses.
Botai’s society and religion centers around its world-encompassing ocean, and the variety of life contained within it. Weapons of any sort are not permitted, even for the priesthood. This includes fishermen and their boats, whom the society is dependent on for much of its food supply. This makes that particular livelihood exceedingly dangerous, as there are a wide variety of aggressive lifeforms within Botai’s oceans, several of which can easily capsize or destroy most fishing boats. Fishermen are considered the “unsung heroes” of the society, though there is no official recognition as such from church leadership; this goes against the teachings of the church.
There is slowly growing dissent and even some open talk against some of these teachings. Too many people have lost too many family members. Many feel that many of these victims would have survived, or at least been given a chance, had they been armed. While the church itself has yet to respond, apparently, there does appear to be a rift in church leadership. Whether this leads to reform, or a crackdown, remains to be seen.
