Melkor is a very important agricultural world. It ships much of its production to other nearby worlds, helping to sustain their burgeoning populations. Though not a rich world, Melkor is not lacking for credits, and the government has invested heavily in the world’s infrastructure. Although a majority of its small cities are scattered across the world, they are connected by an advanced, efficient elevated grav rail system, and most towns and cities are powered by (imported) high tech fusion plants.
Melkor is a pleasant world, and attracts a fair number of tourists each year. In addition to its clean cities and high tech farming operations, the world boasts a number of scenic sights. The Melkoran Mountains, for instance, are a popular mountain range, with great views and ample opportunities for worry-free hiking and camping, as well as several cavern systems.
Technically a balkanized world, Melkor is run by four regional Directives. Each is responsible for a specific region of the plane, and reports to the Melkorian Council. This body technically oversees the world, but has slowly lost most of its power to the Directives. Attempts to return power into the hands of the Council have met with fierce opposition from the Directives, with one such effort nearly causing a civil war. This was decades ago, however, and recent efforts to this end have been less problematic. There are individuals within the Council, and even within the Directives themselves, who believe that returning most power to the Council will greatly increase Melkor’s standing in the eyes of nearby governments, as well as investors, but each attempt towards this end seems doomed to failure.
