The question has always been, WHY was Ereshkigal settled, when there were more appealing options available? The answer, as always with humans, is money. Ereshkigal lies in a mineral rich system, and the turbulence of Ereshkigal’s surface (the world is subject to numerous worldquakes to due the influence of the larger world it orbits) exposes new mineral veins with regularity. Sure, the atmosphere is dreadful, extremely harmful, and continually wears down the mining equipment. But the initial mining companies were more than willing to endure equipment losses and constant upkeep to mine this profitable world.
These days fewer people reside on Ereshkigal itself, living instead in a series of orbital facilities. Much of the mining is conducted via remotely controlled mining equipment, so fewer workers need to be on the surface. The system’s three planetoid belts are also being mined, with their output increasing that of Ereshkigal by approximately 50%.
Over the years the residents have funneled money into large, some would say almost useless, projects. These fall under the category of “Civic Improvement Projects”, and include planetoids hollowed out into the largest near-zero-G garden setting in the region, large, expansive living quarters, complete with plenty of green space and normal 1-G gravity levels, and a series of zero-G “grav ball” arenas. The citizens of Ereshkigal are fanatical about their parks and their favorite grav ball teams. The society spends a large number of credits each season on challenging teams from other systems in “friendly” competitions. The teams from Ereshkigal have won nearly 70% of these matches, proving their expertise and dedication to the sport.
