Ages ago, Trayko was occupied by several mining companies, each extracting separate deposits of lanthanum. As these deposits began to be depleted the corporations pulled out, leaving a number of miners behind, along with the usual detritus of a mining operation – tailing piles, machinery, and the like.
Rather than abandoning the world, the miners remained, working the other known deposits (copper, iron, and so on). Enough ore was extracted to keep the ore carriers returning, and to this day the descendants of the original miners are still here, working the claims.
Technically there is no established government on Trayko. However, groups of concerned miners meet occasionally to discuss issues relevant to everyone. These meetings also cover such topics as problematic miners, trouble spots in the single town, maintenance needs, and so forth. Over the centuries this system has worked passably enough, and there have been no documented attempts to establish a “real” government.
Only once did the small society encounter real problems, when a band of pirates in the region stopped by. Their ships needed some repairs after a series of battles in nearby systems, and Trayko seemed the perfect place to hole up. Their several weeks’ “visit” turned into a month. After the second month, the locals had apparently had enough, and kicked the pirate group out, dealing severe damage to their ships; the pirate fleet was reported to be in worse shape after their departure compared to when they arrived…
