The reasons Gribble was settled have been lost to history. What is known is this small, minor world is over-populated for what their technology can easily support. Fortunately there are sufficient minerals in the world’s crust to maintain a healthy export to nearby industrial worlds. The profits from these exports are what keeps the society functioning.
The system’s lone planetoid belt is being surveyed and mined by a consortium of off-world corporations, who pay fees to Gribble’s government for the privilege. It is believed by many on the world, and even in the government, that these corporations are underpaying what is truly owed. Unfortunately, it is also believed that the highest echelons of the government have been bribed by these same corporations. The pressure and red tape these officials have put in place effectively eliminate any chance of a proper investigation, however.
There is growing talk of reform amongst the regular citizens, and even by some of the wealthier industrialists. Up to this point, however, there has been no action by these groups, as they are not yet organized. A fair amount of pressure is apparently being applied to these groups by the government, as well, and it is feared a general military crackdown (possibly supported by offworld interests) will be instituted if resistance to the current situation grows.
