Glaurung is very much a backwater system. With a population just over one million, no starport to speak of, and an extremely low level of technological development, about the only thing going for the system is its warm environment and low tech setting. Perversely, this has begun to draw in a specific class of tourist – those groups of counter-culture individuals to glory in “the old ways”, historians, and other assorted such groups.
This is by no means an unwelcome phenomenon on Glaurung, which has been a fringe, backwater system as long as anyone can remember. The added income from these tourists is very welcome, as the Glaurung’s economy is incapable of taking true advantage of the world’s very abundant resources. The government, heeding examples of other low tech worlds, has always been reluctant to allow off-world interests onto the world, fearing ecological (and social) damage. The society itself has almost no true infrastructure; roads are local only, plumbing is unheard of, and any industry exists only for local needs. And to complicate the issue a little, those tourists who do visit advise the locals to “not change a thing”; it is the very backwater nature of the world and society which is drawing these tourists in (no one before wished to visit), and changing things “for the better” will ruin conditions for the current influx. Whether this is selfish on the part of these groups is a matter for academics to ponder…
Until a number of changes (or advances) occur, it is highly unlikely Glaurung will change in the near, or even distant, future.
