The world Tero was initially settled for industrial purposes. It was believed certain chemical combinations in the atmosphere could be utilized cheaply and effectively for various industrial purposes. When the research and surveys were finally completed satisfactorily, it was determined this was a “pipe dream”, and the colony was to be abandoned. The fortuitous discovery of rare gemstone and mineral combinations, however, lured a number of people to remain.
Tero is tidally locked to the system’s gas giant. This effect, combined with the world’s unique atmosphere, can generate fierce electrical storms, especially near the world’s equator where the hot and cold sides meet. Note that there is no “tidal zone” region around the world’s equator; it orbits the gas giant too closely to create a shadow region on the surface.
Tero’s main cities are located in a basin area near its north pole. This basin acts somewhat like a tidal zone, creating a small region which is somewhat shielded from the impact zone’s occasional storms. This basin was created by a planetoid impact in the world’s distant past. The heat and pressure of this impact created a number of gems (for instance, diamonds) which are prospected for sale to industrial combines off world.
To this day Tero, a moon of the system’s single gas giant, is a minor world, barely a stop on the itinerary of most commercial ships in the region. The world’s roving prospectors continue to find rare gem combinations, as well as small pockets of the usual minerals (copper, iron, and the like), generating sufficient cargos to draw the interest of free traders (though not the bigger shipping companies).
