Zergi is a world controlled by a religious autocracy. Only the religious elite (and the most devoted supporters) have access to anything resembling higher technology and training, with everyone else (“The Devout”) living in controlled cities, providing labor for The Church and its leader, The Holy One.
Living conditions have always been less than ideal on Zergi, even more so once the population surpassed a hundred million. With over 12 billion now calling Zergi home, conditions are far worse. Though there is a fair bit of suffering, the government (aka The Church) has managed to keep everyone fed. These efforts have been partially paid for by permitting various corporations to mine the systems’ planetoid belts using labor “recruited” from the devout on Zergi. This source of free labor has helped the corporations maintain an excellent profit margin over the years. The profits have also increased recently, as the companies have started to use sub-standard equipment for its operations, especially safety equipment. This fact has not reached Church leadership; it is uncertain what the Church’s response will be if leadership ever determines these facts, and the companies involved are doing everything in their power to keep news from reaching them. So far they have been able to explain the increase in fatalities as substandard training, worker inattentiveness, and the like. How long they can maintain this illusion is unknown.
The settlement in the system’s furthest planetoid belt is a society for the Church’s elite, a ‘paradise’ set up for the most loyal of its leadership. Those who have served faithfully for years are rewarded with access to this garden society. The regular workers here are those Devout who are “rewarded” by being sent to this reported paradise – and never return. Rumors, both in Zergi’s society itself, as well as off world, are many and varied as to what actually happens here.
